Resident/Attending Evaluations
Residents are reviewed on a biannual basis by the Program Director and also monthly by the assigned clinical attending. The rotation evaluations are completed online in New Innovations and are reviewed by the resident. An example of a rotation evaluation can be found in Appendix E. A mid rotation check-in meeting between the resident and rotation attending is expected and it is the responsibility of the resident to arrange this. This can be a phone or virtual meeting if schedules do not allow for in-person. Residents are evaluated in a number of areas including the six competencies of the ACGME: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice and the Dermatology-specific milestones. Several tools are used during the evaluation process and may include chart reviews, procedure logs, and proficiency assessment. In addition, faculty, staff, peers and patients participate in a 360-degree evaluation process annually. Residents are required to perform satisfactorily in all areas. If a resident’s performance is unsatisfactory and /or inconsistent in one or more areas, he/she may be placed on probation (see below). Residents also perform self-assessment and reflection through an Individualized Learning Plan that is reviewed at the mid-year evaluation with the Program Director.
Residents evaluate the program on an annual basis using both a departmental survey on New Innovations and the ACGME resident survey (See Appendix E). Residents evaluate the faculty on a quarterly basis using New Innovations (See Appendix E). These evaluations are all anonymous. In addition, the faculty evaluates the program using surveys on New Innovations. The departmental evaluations are submitted and collated by the Program Coordinator and the Program Director. The ACGME surveys are directly submitted on-line with a data summary being provided to the program to address areas of possible non-compliance. In addition, there is an Annual Program Evaluation (APE) that is reviewed and signed by both faculty and residents and submitted to the Office of Graduate Medical Education. Results of the ACGME survey, the APE as well as the internal evaluations are discussed at a Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) meeting. If at any other time, a resident would like to propose a change to the program in an anonymous fashion, they may use the Resident Program Request Form **(**See Appendix I). Faculty evaluations are provided to each faculty member for their review. These are also made available to the Chairman for discussion at the faculty member’s annual charter review. Additionally, an annual review of each faculty member’s clinical teaching abilities, engagement with the program, participation in faculty development, clinical performance, and professional and scholarly activity will be performed. This evaluation will be incorporated into faculty development plans.
