Away Rotation Policy

In the manual since June 29, 2020

SSM Health/Saint Louis University Dermatology Residency Elective Policy:

Away rotations may be requested for unique educational opportunities not offered by our department. Interested residents apply first to the dermatology faculty and then if approved to the GME.  These away experiences can be clinical, research or other dermatological educational experience. The electives may be local, national or international.

Eligibility: To be eligible for an away elective, residents must be in good standing, scored greater than 32nd% percentile rank on the ABD BASIC exam (or above 25th% percentile rank with a program director approved study plan), have passed all their CORE exams to date.  Residents in their second or third year of dermatology residency are eligible for consideration if they meet the above requirements.

Time allowed for rotation: Residents may request up to a maximum of 4 weeks for an away-rotation. This can either be taken as a single rotation or multiple rotations to different sites. Vacation time must be used if the rotation exceeds this 4-week time allowed.

Funding: The dermatology department does not have funding to support elective costs.

Timeline for submission of request: Residents must submit any away rotation requests to the Program Directors at least 6 months in advance of the away rotation.

Time Away Requests: A Time Away Form must be submitted within 3 business days upon faculty approval of your away rotation request. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of the rotation if resident clinic closures are needed.

If interested, residents must fill out the appropriate paperwork in Appendices S and T and submit to the PD, APD, and PC.
