Duty Hours

Duty hours are defined as all clinical and academic activities related to the residency program.  Duty hours do not include reading and preparation time spent away from the duty site; however they do include time spent charting at home and time spent on the required annual research project.  Additional research endeavors outside of that required by the program do not count towards duty hours.

Duty hours must be limited to 80 hours per week, averaged over a four-week period.   Adequate time for rest and personal activities must be provided.  This should consist of a 10-hour period provided between all daily duty periods.  In-home call will be scheduled in such a way that all residents will have at least 1 day in 7 free from all educational and clinical responsibilities averaged over a 4-week period.  When residents are called into the hospital from home, the hours a resident spends in-house are counted toward the 80-hour limit.

Duty hours must be logged in New Innovations. To remain in compliance with ACGME guidelines, hours must be logged within a 4-week period to be considered current. Delinquent logging will prompt notification by GME, so these logs must be kept up-to-date. Contact the Program Coordinator if you have any issues logging into your account.
