SLU DERMATOLOGY PROTOCOL FOR BMT PATIENTS
DERMATOLOGY CONSULT PAGER: 314-419-7187(M-F, 8AM-5PM)
DERMATOLOGY ON CALL PAGER: 314-419-7186 (all other hours outside of consult hours)
The following protocol is designed as a tool to direct patient care of BMT patients. The protocol is in
place every week, Monday-Friday during normal clinic hours (8A-5P) throughout the year, regardless of
which dermatology attending is on staff for hospital consults.
Protocol:
- Urgent rule-out GVHD for which the BMT clinic is seeking a biopsy only, and not treatment
recommendations, will be seen by the adult consult resident and staffed virtually by the
dermatology consult attending. - All other BMT patients that are needing to be seen urgently may be added on to clinic at CSM at
the discretion of the dermatology attending in clinic that day. In this case, the BMT service is to
page the dermatology consult resident, who will then communicate with the dermatology
attending directly to determine options for being seen.
• ALL BMT patients that are not rule out GHD biopsy only will need to come to clinic.
This includes patients who need treatment recommendations in addition to a GVHD rule
out biopsy.
• BMT patients with skin issues that are not related to their transplant/ malignancy status
should be scheduled as normal and should not be added on for acute visits in clinic. This
includes but is not limited to issues such as, ie. concern for non-melanoma skin cancer,
acne, rosacea, and hair loss. - The process to initiate either protocol will still be to contact the resident on consults through
the above pager number. Any concerns regarding BMT patients outside of normal clinic hours
should be initiated through the dermatology on call resident.
