Dermatologic Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology Curriculum

The dermatologic surgery/cosmetic dermatology curriculum includes melanoma conference, attending lectures on varied topics, and textbook review on surgery-related topics.  While on the Cosmetic Dermatology rotation, residents are expected to read assigned textbooks.  These assignments are as follows:

First year: Cosmetic Dermatology by Leslie Baumann

Second year:  Chemical Peeling and Resurfacing by Harold Brody

or

Lasers and Lights edited by George Hruza and Mathew Avram

Third year:  Cosmeceuticals edited by Zoe Draelos

or

Requisites in Dermatology: Cosmetic Dermatology by Alam, Gladstone and Tung

The resident assigned to the Cosmetic Dermatology rotation also runs Cosmetic literature reviews.  This can include articles relating to cosmetic dermatology, lasers, and cosmetic procedures.  In addition, the resident assigned to Cosmetic Dermatology gives a 30-45 minute lecture on topic of their interest during the rotation.  Both the articles and the lecture have to be approved by Cosmetic Dermatology faculty.

There are also hands-on laboratories during the year to give residents practical training in suturing and closure techniques, nail procedures, injectable cosmetic agents, and laser therapy.  The activities are supervised and/or provided by Drs. Fehlman, Shaikh, Behshad, Aria, West and the Mohs Fellow.

Residents are allowed to participate in aesthetician procedures in lieu of scheduled academic time. When on the Dermatologic Surgery rotation residents will spend some time with Dr. Eddy Hseuh in Surgical Oncology and when on the Cosmetics rotation resident will spend some time with Dr. Collin Chen in Plastic Surgery.
