Appendix OO – OR Biopsies

In the manual since December 18, 2025

  • There have been occasions where the consult/call resident is requested to perform a biopsy under general anesthesia or procedural sedation in the Cardinal Glennon OR
  • According to Surgical Services office, privileging forms do not specify locations, so dermatology is able to perform procedures in the OR
  • Requirements:
  • Overseeing dermatology attending must be present for the time out and key parts of the procedure (see below)
  • Dermatology is required to submit a case request as the secondary/consulting service through Epic. The primary team first schedules the case and shares the case number with the consulting service for us to enter in procedure information within the already existing case. Instructions are provided below.

5.2.4
Surgical Procedures in the Operating Suite.
At all times, the supervising
physician, who is a member of the Medical Staff, shall be responsible for surgical
procedures in the operating suite, including authorizing a resident or sub-
specialty resident, as may be appropriate, to initiate an emergency procedure. In
all cases, the supervising physician shall be physically present in the operating
room as soon as possible after the start of an emergency procedure and during all
key portions thereafter and shall be physically present at the start of a scheduled
or non-emergent procedure and during all key portions thereafter.
The
supervising physician is ultimately responsible for each patient’s care, including
that care rendered by sub-specialtv residents, residents or medical students.

Primary surgeon is the surgeon who is primarily responsible for patient care and will be receiving block credit for
the procedure. This surgeon is generally performing the most significant procedure.
• Primary surgeon completes the Case Request order form, including all required information.
• The primary surgeon’s office reaches out to the other service(s) involved in the combo case to coordinate
a procedure date and time, and provides the Case ID.

by their surgeon.
Partner Surgeon Office
Partner Surgeon is the surgeon who performs an additional procedure but will not be the surgeon whose block
time is utilized or who receives block credit for the case.
• The partner surgeon’s office can locate a case by searching for Open Case and using the Case ID provided
by the primary surgeon’s office.
• In the search bar at the top of your screen, type Open Case and select the Open Case activity.
